Lois Lowry’s book, “The giver” is about a boy named Jonas that lives in a world that is in black and white and there is never any conflict. Jonas’s dad brings home a newborn named Gabe and Jonas started to care about him a lot. It is against the rules so he could get in trouble. One main lesson is It is good to be yourself and if you are good to others good things will happen to you.
In the beginning of the story the author develops the theme by have Jonas be his self around Gabe because he knows that Gabe is like him. Jonas shows Gabe a memory to stop him from crying and that makes him feel closer to him. Jonas is the only one who really understands Gabe even though he is just a baby.
At the middle of the story the author develops the theme having Jonas be himself and being good to others. The giver is the main person that made Jonas be himself. Jonas knows that when he is his self around the giver he won’t get judged. In the book Jonas’s is talking to the giver and saying, “do you see it all the time?” “I see all of them. All the colors”. Jonas is being his self by talking about the colors and how he feels about them.
In the end of the book the author makes the theme clear by having Jonas leave the community so everyone can see the truth and he takes Gabe with him because he didn’t pass his test. Jonas did all of this his self because he knew it was the right thing to do and that’s just who Jonas is. Jonas went through the boundary line and amazing thing happened for everyone and the community.
in conclusion this shows that being yourself will bring good things. Jonas was himself and by doing that he made everyone see the truth. He also made the community a better place. Always be yourself no matter what even if people think it’s wired because those are the people whose lives are not going to be as good as yours.
